Chapter Fourteen

“How did you know where to find us?”

“The Oceanids have always come and gone through the Oasis. I figured it wouldn’t be long before you came back.”

“Yes, but how did you know we were here? We’ve been in Geyra for almost a week searching for you with no luck.”

“I didn’t know you had arrived. It was the High Mage who felt your presence.”

How could someone feel their presence? It’s not like they were simplistic sea creatures. The High Mage must truly be powerful to have a gift like that.

Fader smiled, as if reading her thoughts. “He’ll have to explain how he does it. The magic is beyond my skills.”

“Does that mean we get to meet him?”

“He had me wait here, knowing you would return so that I could take you to him.”

That was a relief. The High Priestess had convinced them to journey all this way. At least their trip wouldn’t be in vain. She only hoped he was receptive to their needs. “Does he know why we’ve come? Do you think he will help us? When can we see him?”

Fader put his hands in the air. “Woah, slow down. I know there is much to discuss, and I know the High Mage is eager to speak with you. Be patient, and all your questions will be answered.”

“How far away is the High Mage? Can you at least tell me that?”

“Not far. An hour through the desert, perhaps.”

Tahoe cut in. “An hour? Through this storm? How are we going to do that?”

“Be thankful the storm has come. That is one of the few times outsiders can actually reach the temple.”

That didn’t make sense. Surely, the storm would only slow them down. Outsider or not, how could anyone see through the storm? “What do you mean? Won’t we get lost in the sandstorm?”

“The storm winds create a vacuum at the temple steps, which lifts the ungifted up. It’s quite an exhilarating experience. Come, I’ll show you.” Fader gestured and the sand-filled wind parted in front of them, giving them a clear path through the storm. “Don’t worry. I’ve come and gone from the temple many times. You are in expert hands.”

Fader walked past them, heading toward the east, away from the city of Geyra. The storm still raged around them, although the protective barrier erected by Fader persisted. It moved with him. As he walked away, the sand and water pelted her again. Still perched in Tahoe’s arms, she pinched him and he scurried to catch up. They quickly found themselves back within the magical protection. Fader’s magical influence seemed effortless. When she cast her hydrokinetic barrier, it took all her concentration. Fader’s magic seemed superior to hers—at least in this. That intrigued her. If he was just a disciple, their visit with the High Mage appeared promising.

They walked for several minutes through the storm, which never seemed to pass. They stepped out into the open desert, which was like stepping out of a kelp forest and into the open ocean—nothing in sight for miles.
